A proper safe isn't a nice-to-have — under the Firearms Control Act it's a legal requirement for every firearm owner in South Africa, and it's inspected before your licence is granted. Here's what you need to know, and how to choose a safe you won't outgrow.
What the law requires
The FCA regulations require that a firearm not under your direct physical control be stored in a prescribed, SABS-approved safe (built to the relevant SANS standard for gun safes), properly installed. In practice that means:
- A safe carrying the correct SABS/SANS approval — not a filing cabinet with a lock.
- Securely fixed to the structure of the building (bolted to a wall and/or floor).
- Keys or codes under your control only — handing your safe key to an unlicensed person is an offence.
When you apply for a licence, the DFO can inspect your storage. No compliant safe, no licence — it's that direct. (Getting your paperwork started? Read our licence guide.)
Choosing the right size — buy bigger than you think
The most common regret we hear: "I should have bought the bigger one." Rifles with mounted scopes take more space than you expect, and most owners add a firearm (or three) over the years. Our rule of thumb: whatever you own now, buy at least two spaces more.
- Handgun safes — compact wall or shelf-mounted units for a single pistol; from around R1,000.
- 3–5 rifle safes — the standard home setup, with an internal lockable ammo compartment.
- 6–16 rifle safes — for collectors and dedicated hunters; sliding-rack interiors make daily access easier.
We stock the Magnum Safes range — SABS-approved, South African made, from compact handgun units up to 16-gun sliding safes — and we can advise on placement and installation.
Installation matters as much as the safe
Bolt through the back into brick or through the floor into concrete, using proper anchor bolts — not wood screws into a skirting board. Position the safe out of sight of windows and casual visitors. In coastal or damp areas, keep it off exterior walls where condensation forms.
Protect what's inside
A sealed steel box traps moisture, and rust never sleeps. Throw a dehumidifier unit in the safe (we stock the RAM Drisafe moisture absorber for under R100 — cheap insurance for a R30,000 rifle), wipe firearms down with an oiled cloth before they go in, and store ammunition in its own compartment, cool and dry.
